SoA M or CAS 3?

Should I take Course M or CAS Exam 3? It depends. In simplest terms, CAS 3 is almost everything tested on SoA M, with an addition of Applied Statistics. Although the CAS will accept SoA M as credit for CAS 3, students who wish to pursue a Fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Societies may find the materials in CAS 3 more useful.

FAQ

Is CAS 3 easier than SoA M?

It depends. Historically, there were people who passed M and failed 3 and vice versa. The syllabi are different, such that 25% of CAS 3 is not tested on M, so students will need plan their study programs differently for M and 3.

Can I guess on CAS 3?

Yes, but you are not encouraged to. For Exams 1, 2, and 4, as well as the transitional VEE exams, no guessing adjustment is made to candidates' scores. Therefore, candidates will maximize their scores on these examinations by answering every question. On Exams 3 multiple-choice questions are scored in such a way that there is no advantage or disadvantage to be anticipated from guessing answers in a purely random fashion as compared with omitting the answers entirely. No additional points will be given for multiple-choice questions left blank, but one-quarter of the point value for each question will be deducted for each incorrect answer.
