Farmer Suicides - A Global Perspective. (ppt)
This presentation discusses the issue of farmer suicides from a global
perspective. In particular, the history of farmer suicides in
developed nations is traced. Farmer suicides have been common in
countries like US and Australia too. The governments in these
countries seem to play a very active role in protecting their
agriculture, for example through various risk management strategies.
In particular, the idea of offering farm insurance appears to be very
attractive since it makes the government a direct stakeholder in the
agriculture and in some sense ensures that it will stand by
agriculture-friendly policies.
