Mehdiganj introduction
Resolution:
AID Austin believes that the communities should be aware of their rights and should be empowered to exercise them. The communities should have the decision making power regarding development, actions or events that impact their way of life. Water for domestic consumption is a basic human right. Lack of adequate legislation and implementation has led to exploitation of water resources. Communities should be responsible for and have the rights to manage their water resources in an equitable and sustainable manner.
The community in Mehendigaj is facing a problem of decreased water availability. The Coca Cola plant in Mehendiganj has encroached upon the Panchayat land, evaded stamp duty and dumped harmful sludge in the fields. The people of Mehdiganj have been fighting against a corrupt and unresponsive government which has not taken sufficient action.
AID Austin endorses the struggle of the community of Mehdiganj to strengthen their local democracy and decision making. We also support the community's campaign to gain control of local water resources.
AID Austin will work to understand and raise awareness about water issues, communities struggling with the same and government policies that impact them.
