Project Community Environmental Monitoring - Phase II (Link to CEM Phase I, CEM Phase II)
Location Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu
Focus Environmental Monitoring and Community Empowerment
NGO Information CEM is a project of New Delhi - based The Other Media. It also involves FEDCOT (a consumer rights organisation), Global Community Monitor ( US based organisation involved in environment related community campaigns) and SIPCOT Area Community Environmental Monitors (SACEM).
Project Summary Besides training villagers in the science of pollution, the Community Environmental Monitoring initiative seeks to involve villagers in the fight against pollution by engaging them in environmental and health monitoring, and sustainable livelihood activities. While local self-help is an emphasis, CEM's philosophy also hinges on holding corporations and polluters accountable. For more information, please visit http://sipcotcuddalore.com
Objective
  • To research, test and deploy simple and inexpensive tools in communities to allow them to monitor their own environment.
  • To equip community members with skills on documentation of pollution and air and water sampling.
  • To help bring in new monitoring standards for VOCs and sulfur-based gases in ambient air under the Indian Law.
