Compassion wherever there is suffering. Conviction that the compassion is strong enough to eliminate suffering. Courage to make this conviction a reality. This is AID.

Project : Development Initiative
State : Jharsaguda Dt, Orissa
Development Focus:  Leadership training, formation of Self-help groups and community sensitization to issues of unorganized labour.

About the NGO*:  Development Initiative (DI) is committed to the cause of displacement, rights of unorganized labour, womens rights and community-based management of natural resources in Western Orissa. AID has not worked with this NGO before. They were highly recommended by an AID Saathi, Madhusudan Das. They conducted a very good Govt. of India sponsored study (enclosed document) on working conditions and socio-economic status of Kendu leaf workers in Western Orissa about 2 years ago.

Summary:  The Kendu leaf pluckers and beedi workers have been exploited by middle-men and beedi industry for many years. They are denied proper health care, timely wages, raw materials, provident fund participation, identity cards, etc. required by Central Govt. guidelines. DI wants to raise awareness, sensitize the community to these issues and create women's self-help groups which will ultimately take up the responsibility of demanding their rights. The self-help groups will also take up alternative vocations and pursue savings activities. They want to conduct leadership training, community level workshops and establish 20 women's self-help groups from among Kendu leaf plucking and beedi rolling families in 10 villages of Jharsaguda block.

Objectives of Project:  After 2 years, the expected output is 20 active women's self-help groups with atleast 15 pursuing an alternate vocation and regular in savings activities. DI expects that atleast 100 beedi workers will get government identity cards and the accompanying compulsory benefits from the beedi industry. They also expect that the leadership of the village level groups will bring the unorganized labourers together to pursue common matters on their own without DI intervention.

Requested Budget: $5800. Project being jointly reviewed by AID-Milwaukee and AID-Austin.
Status: Not Approved
