Project : Kala Azar
State : Bihar
Development Focus: Health

About the NGO*:  CHARM is based in Patna, Bihar and works on improving health conditions of the poorest communities. CHARM is involved with training, advocacy, education, situation analysis and developing IEC materials on health relevant topics and the well being of the disadvantaged citizens. One of the major goals is to influence the govt. to effect changes in the health program to make effective program implementation towards improving the health of the people. The NGO is implementing both curative and preventive measures to treat some of the major killer diseases in the area, in addition to buiding awareness among the people and influencing the Govt. to improve the implementation of its health program.

Summary of Project:  This project aims at controlling the killer disease, Kala Azar, which is endemic in certain regions of Bihar, U.P and Orissa. Both curative and preventive actions will be taken to control the disease. The project targets the poorest in the community, which are the Musahars (rat eaters).

Objectives of Project: 
1. Indoor spraying of DDT twice (in a period of one year)
2. Treatment of 75 patients.
3. Health education to increase general community awareness.

Requested Budget: $ 5080.
