Project
: Rural Reconstruction Society
State :
Nellore District, Andhra Pradesh
Development Focus: Children's
Development
About the NGO*:
Rural Reconstruction Society was started in the year 1987 in Kavali,
of Nellore District, to integrate the downtrodden into mainstream
development through enhanced critical awareness, organization.
Since its inception, RRS has implemented programs in the areas
of waste management, women's empowerment, adult literacy, preventive
health and income generation.
Existing Conditions:
Balakrishnareddy nagar is a major slum in Kavali town with a population
of 6,000. The Yanadis are a marginalized tribe, who are into hard
physical labor in order to eke out barely a hand to mouth existence.
The children are drawn into labor at a tender age, depriving them
of a 'childhood'. Caught up in their struggle for survival, the
community lacks awareness and organization and the essential skills
for assuming responsibility for ensuring holistic child development.
Objectives of Project:
This project aims to tackle
the above mentioned issues at two levels. While long term sustainable
measures are planned in the areas of women empowerment, organization,
advocacy, accessing governmental resources etc, in the short term
a transit school is proposed to facilitate the enrollment of the
target children into government schools.
