Hey, thanks to everyone who showed up at last night’s meeting. Just in case you missed it, here are some of the things we talked about.
Points work the same as they did last semester – old members need twelve points to stay active, and new members need nine points. We’ve got lots of ways for you to earn your points, so it should be easy for everyone to be active!
- Meetings are worth one point. If you miss a meeting, just bring two canned goods to any officer’s office hours (held in the Honors Center in the basement of Carothers dormitory) to find out what you missed and to get your point for that meeting.
- Service events are worth one point per hour of service.
- Social events are worth one point per event.
- Academic events are worth one point per event.
- Driving to an event is worth one point on top of any points earned from the event itself.
Remember: your active status won’t affect your membership status (once you become a member, you’re a member for life). However, active members get to attend the end-of-semester banquet for free, and being active helps in officer and scholarship selection.
PES scholarship: available to undergraduates and graduates. The application is due no later than February 20 (you can turn it in at any officer’s office hours). Contact Alaina for more details.
First academic event of the semester: Dr. David L. Lambert’s presentation, “Heaven’s Kitchen: Primordial Soup, Stellar Entrees, and Galactic Dessert”
When: Saturday, February 9 from 1:00-2:00 pm
Where: Avaya Auditorium in the ACES building
If you attend, be sure to find Sasha after the presentation so you can sign in.
First service event of the semester: Garden Workday at Hillcrest Elementary School
When: Saturday, February 16 from 9:00 am-12:00 pm
Meet at the Honors Center at 8:00 am. If you can drive, please let us know!
First (they’re all firsts, aren’t they?) movie night of the semester: The Sandlot
When: Wednesday, February 6 at 10:00 pm
Where: Texas Union Theater
Be sure to get there early (around 9:25 pm) so we can get good seats.
Later in the semester, we’ll be playing coed indoor soccer. We’ll make more announcements about this as the season approaches; in the meantime, start practicing your game faces.
If you’re in the College of Liberal Arts or Natural Sciences and have at least a 3.0 GPA, you can apply to be a TIP mentor at www.utexas.edu/tip/MentorAcademy. TIP mentors provide support for incoming TIP scholars. This is a great way to develop your leadership skills and receive valuable training and international mentor/tutor certification! Contact Sasha with any questions.
We’re giving you the chance to design new T-shirts for ALDPES! If you’d like, you can design one T-shirt for each organization; just remember you can use a maximum of two colors, there should be lettering on the front with a tagline on the back, and these need to be coed friendly! The lucky member who has his or her shirt chosen as the new design will GET A SHIRT FOR FREE! If you didn’t get a T-shirt template at the meeting, you can pick one up at any officer’s office hours. We will accept designs through next Wednesday, February 6.
Here are the days and times for officer hours:
Presidents: Tuesday 8:10-9:10

Treasurers: Tuesday 3:00-4:00

Service Events Coordinators: Wednesday 3:00-4:00
