2003-2004 APSC Officers

position? |
APSC President |
year? |
5th year UT student, 3rd year SoA student |
ideas? |
My goals this year are to get more involvement and interaction in SoA, both between years and with other schools at UT with activities like the pumpkin carving, beaux arts ball, mixed media, happy hours, Habitat for Humanity, and a lot more. I also want to increase communication between the students and the administration because this is our school and we should be involved in decisions that affect our education. And of course I want to continue improving the mentorship program this year. |
best thing about SoA? |
Hands on learning |
best escape from studio? |
Midnight rugby and Texas Union movies (less painful) |
advice/WARNING? |
Take a break whenever you can. Hold onto your non-arch friends. He who sleeps least is not the best/coolest (so I hear). |

position? |
APSC Vice-President of Student Affairs |
year? |
2nd year SoA student |
ideas? |
Creating strong inter-student interaction through mentor/ mentee program, further connect the student body with the faculty members, providing students with information on subjects such as: internship, scholarship, & social events. |
best thing about SoA? |
Nothing is right or wrong, only better solutions or not-as-good solutions. Nothing is impossible if you give it a try. |
best escape from studio? |
Grab a few fellow studio peeps with you and go to Metro at 3am. |
advice/WARNING? |
Prepare to sacrifice your precious Sunday sleep-in time as a result of escaping studio during the weekend. And don't ever say it out loud to a person that he/she has "super-natural abilities (ie. pulling an 8-day all-nighter)". He/she will lose it immediately. =) |

position? |
APSC Vice-President of Communications |

3rd year SoA student |
ideas? |
It'd be great if everyone in SoA knew about all the stuff we have going on. Trust me, there's tons of stuff. You probably don't even know about it. I plan to tell you. With cool pin-ups like these. |
best thing about SoA? |
Being able to walk around our buildings and see so much being created every day. You’d be amazed at what you can learn by stepping away from your own desk and seeing someone else’s. |
best escape from studio? |
Just get in a car and go away, or a bike, or run away if necessary. Just go. |
advice/WARNING? |
Find your place here. Explore all we have to offer. Don't sleep in The Box more than two nights in a row. |

position? |
APSC Vice President of Social Interaction |

ideas? |
We really need to work on getting funds for student government, but it’s so difficult to get student involvement to acquire such funds. I feel we need to work on student attendance of lectures, as well as have more social events to look forward to. Our busy schedules make it difficult to think about anything other than deadlines in our design classes, but when it comes down to socializing now with students, professors and perhaps outside architects at this early stage of our career will prove to be very beneficial in the future. |
best thing about SoA? |
How impressed people are when you tell them you’re an Architecture major, Design just rocks period. |
best escape from studio? |
Always make sure you set aside personal time. Architecture has this funny way of being all encompassing, (you’ll find that out when you point out a name different brick configurations, or when you go out to eat at an awesome restaurant and your left in awe by the lighting fixtures). I like to go to the gym, or jog around campus; it really helps me clear my mind. |
advice/WARNING? |
Just make sure you always set aside some R&R time. |

position? |
APSC Community Service Chair |
year? |
3rd year SoA student |
ideas? |
The normal stuff like Habitat for Humanity, but also things not so architecturally related. Anyway we can reach out in the community will help - and maybe, through student-firm volunteering, we can meet local architects while both firms and students work together at community improvement. |
best thing about SoA? |
The best professor discusses with you as a peer instead of preaching to you as a student, and even with the not-so-favorite professors, there is an openness in studio communication that results in good dialogue and honest design. |
best escape from studio? |
For longer escapes, take a dip in Barton Springs or catch a movie - both are guaranteed to make you forget studio for a few minutes. And for shorter escapes, take late night breaks to play hackie, basketball, or yes, rugby. Planning these shorter breaks in the middle of the night gives you something to look forward to and also act as a pick-me-up for continued work during those glorious early morning hours. |
advice/WARNING? |
Take your vitamins. Arch. can take a toll on your health, so its better to get that immune system up and ready so you won't fall sick during deadlines. |

ideas? |
Get cool things happening, get everyone cool involved, and get it to be a cool tradition. (a poem) |
best thing about SoA? |
The forced intimacy of studio culture, the epiphanies, the fact that BS and legitimate arguments are one in the same, and the designing/thought process you gain that allows you to do ANYTHING! |
best escape from studio? |
Day sleeping or night rugby. |
advice/WARNING? |
There’s more to you than architecture, so do more than architecture - have fun with all you do. |

best escape from studio? |
Get friends outside school of SOA, they know what to do. |
advice/WARNING? |
If you need to take care of stuff in the shop, do it early, cause they will kick you out right at the time they leave. Not a second more. |

position? |
Student Government Representative |
year? |
3rd year SoA student |

I’d like to represent SoA's interests in Student Government. Remind SoA that there are actually other students at UT even if they don't ever see them. |

best escape from studio? |
Theme parties (e.g. 80's dance party) (sans alcohol). |
advice/WARNING? |
Broaden your horizons. Make sure to do other things besides studio...Remember what Vitruvius said. An architect must have knowledge of music, medicine, art, science....everything. |
