Advocacy
Advocacy
Advocacy, for us, turns cancer into a political issue. Though many people don't realize it, government--and the policies it sets in place--is very relevant to fighting cancer. Some of the issues for which we advocate are:
- Stricter tobacco laws--like the smoking ban--and higher tobacco taxes
- Funding for research
- Medical help for the uninsured
- Ensuring that cancer screenings (eg, mammograms) are covered by insurance
In order to advocate, we must raise awareness of these issues and get other concerned citizens to take a stand with us. We must tell our legislators--by mail, fax, email, phone, or in person--that we care about these issues and convince them that they should, too. Cancer is something that effects everyone, regardless of race, class, or gender, and it should be at the top of our government's priorities.
Cancer Action Network
Most of our advocacy issues are part of larger ACS initiatives. The Cancer Action Network keeps track of these initiatives and informs citizens of ways that they can help. Through the CAN website, you can find the latest information, register to vote, find out who your elected officials are and where they stand, email them about current legislation, and contact your local media. It's a great resource for anyone who wants to take on a larger role in cancer-related policies.
