Nearly two thirds of all cancers are caused by lifestyle choices. Choices we make every day--what foods to eat, how much to exercise, whether or not to put on sunscreen--are the choices that affect our chances of developing cancer. One of the most important things we can do for ourselves is making smart choices each day. Some good choices include:

Early Detection

Aside from prevention, the most important factor in cancer survival is early detection. Cancer that is caught early is easier to treat and less likely to have spread and cause other complications. Thus, it's important that we all get regular check-ups from our doctors. Adults over 50 should be screened annually for colon cancer. Women should get regular mammograms, and men should be checked for prostate cancer. If your family has a history of cancer, it's important to be checked more often.
