It’s Monday again. Your watch says 2:50 P.M. As you cross 21st St. and Speedway, hundreds of nameless faces scurry past you on their way to class. At UT, in a self-sufficient community of 52,000 students, it’s easy to overlook what’s beyond the 40 Acres.
Last year, the CBS "Remix" Talent Show attracted a crowd over 1,400. Remix offered a diverse blend of acts including traditional cultural dances, Greek step shows, a monologue, and much more. It was the first time that CBS (now AACM) partnered with other organizations in the annual talent show. No longer could AACM label the talent show solely its own, but it was given to the entire campus. Remix sparked a revolution in the vision of Talent Show. This year, AACM wanted to take another step forward and extend the Talent Show not only to the campus, but to the world. "How is AACM going to do that? A tour show around the world?" Well, not exactly.
For this year, Talent Show will be benefiting International Justice Mission. IJM is a non-profit organization whose mission is to assist oppressed areas around the world, working with local authorities to provide relief for victims of injustice. These victims range anywhere from children being forced into prostitution to illegally imprisoned and abused people. Proceeds raised through the process of the Talent Show will go directly to IJM, aiding global distress areas, including South Asia, where countless children are now orphaned from the recent tsunami. IJM is working to protect these orphans from human sex traffickers.
You might be asking, "So does that mean Talent Show is charging tickets this year?" Nope. It’s still free admission. Instead, one of the ways AACM is going to fundraise is by asking its members to pray and fast a meal and contribute the money saved to IJM. However, there is still an invitation extended to the campus to give to the IJM through donations at the Talent Show itself. Another way is through local business donations. All of these contributions will benefit IJM directly.
