    What does the ESA do?

Who founded the ESA and when?
Werner Marti, Denis Berlinger (both from Switzerland) and Pierre Kelsen (Luxembourg) founded the ESA in the summer of 1989. During the first active semester, the fall of 1989, there was no constitution yet, but Werner Marti was de facto president. Other active members then included Pierre Kelsen and Ulf Hermjakob (Germany). Ulf Hermjakob, because of his outstanding performance serving various ESA officer position and unmatched contribution of warmness, enthusiasm, ideas and organizational hype to ESA life, was granted a permanent membership in the association.
