University
of Texas at Austin
GRADUATE STUDENT ASSEMBLY
Faculty Council
Report of Meeting
2003 September 15
GSA Attendees included Marian Barber, and Don Drumtra.
Other student representatives included members from Student
Government and the Senate of College Councils. Items discussed
are listed on the Agenda. President Faulkner welcomed
all and provided a few remarks that he will most likely
repeat in his State of the University Report Wednesday,
September 17. The Secretary's report and the minutes of
the previous regular meeting and special meeting are of
particular interest. Prof. Michael Granof reported there's
a newly formed Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics
made up of representatives from the schools participating
in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). The idea is to
bring out the positive aspects of intercollegiate athletics
and to create a framework addressing such issues as academic
integrity, the welfare of student-athletes, and over-commercialization.
Granof, who is the immediate past-chair of the Faculty
Council, is UT's rep to this committee and is on its steering
committee. Reports Relating to 78th Legislative Actions—Summary
of Legislative actions by Gwen Grigsby (associate vice
president for government relations), Benefits and HR Issues
by Kyle Cavanaugh (associate vice president for human
resources), and Budget Items, by Kevin Hegarty (vice president
and chief financial officer)—provided a good summary
of news already available in the Daily Texan and on various
UT Websites. Because this was the first meeting there
was no unfinished business, new business, nor reports
from committees.
Marian Barber and Don Drumtra
