C/O Marian Barber and Don Drumtra

GSA,

I would like to apologize for not being able to attend tonight’s meeting. I am currently in a Tuition Policy Committee meeting finalizing our proposal which is to be released tomorrow. I would however like to share with you several initiatives that SG has been and is currently working on.

SG has been working with Physical Plant and Staff Council to identify initiatives in which students can help to beautify the campus. I will be updating you and seeking your help on these initiatives in the future.

The Student Services Fee Committee has begun to meet and will continue to meet over the next two months. We look forward to working with GSA throughout this process.

The UT System Student Advisory Council met for the first time on September 12. Marian Barber and I represent UT Austin on this committee. At our meeting we discussed the outcome of the Texas Legislature, the tuition setting process going on at each system component institution, university admissions practices, health insurance needs, issues pertaining to campus life and academic integrity. I am the chair of the Student/Faculty/Staff Campus Life Committee and also serve on the Legislative Relations Committee, and the Finance and Planning Committee. Marian is the chair of the Health and Graduate Affairs Committee and also serves on the Academic Affairs Committee and the Technology/Facilities Committee. If you would like more information on anything we discussed I would be more then happy to sit down with you to further address these issues.

The UT System Tuition Advisory Committee met for the first time on September 15. Annie Holland (SBA President), Garyn Schuler (Pharmacy Council President), Dean Lariviere (College of Liberal Arts) and I are your UT Austin representatives. We will be meeting one more time in October, before everyone comes together in early November to examine each individual UT System component institutions tuition recommendations before they go to the Regents for final approval.

Sly and I are working with a city funded agency called Livable City to help in the planning of central Texas, in particular of areas around UT Austin. Dean Steiner, of the College of Architecture, is also working with this group. A survey will be in the Daily Texan on October 9 and I ask that you take the time to fill it out and return it to the SG office. These surveys will help us as we plan growth for central Texas over the next 20 years.

I will be appointing a committee some time over the next month to address the current student health insurance program, MEGA LIFE. I will be asking GSA to provide representatives to work with the University Health Center, Student Government and the Senate of College Councils in identifying additional medical coverage we would like to see included in the insurance program.

I am working with the Ombudsman, Legal Affairs and the Office of the President to write a student employee grievance policy. We are in the initial stages of this process but we will be asking for you feedback as we move forward on this initiative.

Once again, I do apologize for not being able to attend tonight. If you have any questions about these or any other initiatives SG is working on please don’t hesitate to contact me.
