1. Attendees included President Faulker;
Drs. Roeckle, Vick, and Eckland-Olson; and
the seven student leaders of SG, SCC and GSA.
GSA attendees were Joyce Banks, Marian Barber,
and Don Drumtra.
2. Texas State budget certification.
President Faulkner discussed the various problems
that could resulting from the Texas State
Treasurer decision not to certify the budget.
[She certified the budget later in the afternoon
so the problem will not result.]
3. Tuition. We discussed possible processes,
to address concerns raised by tuition deregulation,
. Although we are still in the planning phrase,
President Faulkner assured the participants
that students would be included in any process
established.
4. Pending Supreme Court decision on affirmative
admission policy. President Faulkner discussed
the potential impact of the various decisions
the Supreme Court might make regarding consideration
of race in University of Michigan admission
consideration. The President is prepared to
respond to reporters questions when the decision
is announced.
5. TA, RA, and AI pay and health
benefits. President Faulkner discussed
the impact of the Texas Legislature cuts in
health benefits for TA, RA, and AI, student
employees. The University has decided that
current students will be grandfathered under
current provisions at least for a year. There
will be no reduction of benefits. This also
applies to students entering in fall 2003.
The policy for students entering in 2004 is
under study.
6. Gender Resources Center.
The SG President Brian Haley, discussed a
proposal to establish a gender and sexuality
information resource center on campus similar
to ones at other universities. President Faulkner
was not familiar with the issue and could
not comment. Brian will address the issue
in more detail at a future meeting.
7. Spanish translation button for
UT Website. Brian suggested that a Spanish
translation button be added to the UT Website.
President Faulkner thought that Dr. Updegrove
was already working on that and suggested
Brian contact him.
8. Representation to the UT System Student
Advisory Committee (UTSAC). The number
of student representatives on the UTSAC was
discussed. UT system has not provided UT Austin
any further information.
9. Representation on PSAC. President
Faulkner has approved a new charter for the
PSAC. It includes the addition of one additional
GSA representative member to the PSAC in addition
to the Co-chairs. Student members will now
include four from SG, four from SCC, and three
from GSA more closely reflecting the number
of undergraduate and graduate students at
UT Austin.
10. Notification of SGCC. After
the meeting, Don advised Drs. Eckland-Olson,
Vick, and Roeckle about the formation of the
Student Governance Consultative Committee
(SGCC) so that they would be aware of it should
someone mention it to them.
