A RESOLUTION

CONCERNING STUDENT PRIVACY OPTIONS
FOR PERSONAL INFORMATION

Unanimously approved by the GSA on April 29, 2002

WHEREAS some students are concerned about their safety on campus and would therefore rather not have their personal name, phone, local address, and email information available to the general public;

WHEREAS some of these students would like to have their personal information available to other students in their classes on blackboard and to be able to receive email from course instructors through Blackboard while others would not;

WHEREAS the current University system of privacy does not accommodate the need for two levels of security to support different students privacy needs;

WE THEREFORE RESOLVE that the GSA recommend that the administration revise current policy to allow all students select three levels of privacy of their personal information:

  1. General availability to the public external and internal to the university;
  2. Availability to only to classmates, faculty, and staff, internal to the university; and
  3. Available only to faculty and staff internal to the university.
