How Does Your Family Keep the Faith?

One of the problems I have always had as a Hindu is that I have always considered myself to be less spiritual than all my peers because of the lack of religious education that I have. However, coming to Hindu Students Council, I have realized that there are many different ways of practicing Hinduism. Some people practice by being more spiritual while others by being more religious. Some also believe that you should have a balance of both.

This meeting is an attempt to understand how the current generation practices Hinduism and how this has changed from generation to generation. There is no right or wrong way to practice, which is what I believe to be an essential part to Hinduism. Hinduism is such a broad and diverse religion, practices will probably differ within people of our own generation.

To start you thinking about this topic, I would like to leave you with these questions:

How do you practice Hinduism? How are your practices different from your parents or your grandparents? Lastly, why do you practice the way you do?

Philosophy of Attachment

To achieve peace of mind and enlightenment, Hinduism teaches to free oneself from one's attachments. While peace of mind sounds quite appealing, as college students, surrounded by hectic schedules, supportive friends, interesting hobbies, etc., it could seem far-fetched and unreachable...or even undesirable. Loving one's friends and family doesn't seem like such a bad thing, right? And, being attached to one's ambitions and goals seems fairly positive too. With such complex literature, breaking down the Hindu concepts of attachment and detachment as a means to happiness becomes difficult. Come share your perspective and your ideas this Tuesday at 7:30 pm in GAR 1.126!
