Hinduism is the third most popularly followed religion in the world, with over a billion adherents. It is also considered the oldest religion that is still followed today. In the United States alone, over one million people identify as Hindus, and that number is rapidly growing. As Hinduism embraces a variety of cultural practices and beliefs and has no unifying religious authority, it is often difficult to understand the essential beliefs of Hinduism. As a result, it is one of the most widely misunderstood religions in the world.

The goal of Hinduism Awareness Week is twofold. The first goal is to spread awareness throughout the campus of the Hindu community and to teach both Hindus and non-Hindus about Sanatana dharma. The second is to help the members of HSC themselves better understand their own religion.

Potential Hinduism Awareness Week activities include student-led presentations, bhajan sessions, visits to the Austin Hindu Temple, antakshari, game nights, and community service activities. There will also be discussions to help clear misconceptions of Hinduism and to help students gain a better understanding. All activities during this week will be student-organized and intended to be interactive, constructive and fun. If you have questions, ideas or suggestions for activities or just want to discuss the event in general, please contact the Hinduism Awareness Chair at vorugantihk@gmail.com.
