Holi, the festival of colors, is a major Hindu festival that celebrates both the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil on the day of the full moon. On the day of Holi, people celebrate by throwing rang (colored powder) and water on each other, and by taking part in traditional games to the sound of the dhol.

The festival tradition of applying colored powder comes from Lord Krishna's complaints to his mother about the contrast between his dark skin and his consort Radha's fair color. His mother applied color to Radha's face to make appear to have the same skin color.

The spring season, during which the weather changes, is believed to cause viral fever and colds. The playful throwing of the colored powders therefore had a medicinal significance: the colors were traditionally made of Neem, Kumkum, Haldi, Bilva, and other medicinal herbs prescribed by Ayurvedic doctors due to their benefits on our skin. Originally, the powders that were used to celebrate Holi came from the flowers of trees that blossomed during the Spring, which had bright red flowers.
