DOCUMENTARY II: "Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet"
Thursday, September 23, 2004
Screening
of the PBS documentary "Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet", provided
us with a perspective on how the legacy of Prophet Muhammad has shaped
the lives of various Muslim immigrants and American born Muslims. UT History
Professor Dr. Denise Spellberg further informed us on the topic.
The discussion continued during the social hour.
Who is Prof. Denise Spellberg?
She is an associate professor in the history department at UT. She specializes
in the Middle East. Medieval Islamic history and religion are her primary
fields of interest although she has also studied Ottoman Turkish and Byzantine
cultures and the pre-Islamic religions of Iran. In addition, she has examined
social attitudes toward women in each of these historical contexts.
This
was the first IDSA event of the semester. A great number of people contributed
to the discussion. It was an enrichening experience.
