"I think that being able to meet the needs
of students is important since our campus is so diverse," said Doug
Gerrard, associate director of housing and food. "It's our goal to serve
students."
Muslim organizations on campus are creating programs for the holiday
as well. The Islamic Dialogue Student Association will host an iftar
each week during the month of Ramadan.
The Institute of Interfaith Dialogue and the IDSA will host a large
iftar Nov. 15 at the Thompson Conference Center.
The Muslim Student Association will also host weekly iftars, as well
as discussions on Friday nights. The MSA will also distribute prepared
meals consisting of a bottle of water, dates and a light snack.
The MSA will also conduct the second annual
Fast-A-Thon, during the week of Nov. 13. Austin businesses will pay
$1 to the Austin Area Food Bank for each student who agrees to fast
for one day. Last year, the Fast-A-Thon had 600 participants, and this
year the MSA expects to recruit 1,000 students.
"Having all these bounties becomes very
ordinary, and you forget to appreciate," said Polat, a foreign language
education graduate student who works with the Islamic Dialogue Student
Association. "Ramadan helps me appreciate these bounties."
