MATCHING PROCEDURE :

The general guidelines for matching PALS are:
Time of application: first come, first served
Gender: we try to match same sex partners
Age: similar, if possible
Interests: something in common

Because our goal is to match every international applicant with a PAL, priority is given to American applicants who show the most flexibility in country and language preferences. Also, as we have more international than American applicants, it may take us longer to match some international students. For this reason, some international students ask to be matched with another international student from a different language background. If you are an international student who would like to be matched with another international student, please indicate this on your application form.

Special Note to Americans requesting a Spanish-speaking PAL:
In general, we receive many more applications from Americans seeking a Spanish-speaking PAL than we can accommodate. Your application will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. If you would like to be matched right away, we can match you with a PAL from another country while you wait for a Spanish-speaking PAL.

HOW TO HAVE A GREAT PALS EXPERIENCE :

  • BE ON TIME: When you make an appointment with your PAL, arrive at the designated place on time.

  • BE CONSISTENT: Meet with your PAL at least once a week for one hour for the duration of the semester or summer session unless you and your PAL agree to meet less.

  • ATTEND THE ACTIVITIES: This is not required, but the activities are fun and a great way to meet new people!

  • KNOW YOUR EXPECTATIONS: It is important that you understand what both you and your PAL expect to gain from the experience.

  • TAKE YOUR TIME: Remember that cross-cultural communication is not easy.

  • CHECK YOUR E-MAIL OFTEN: The PALS coordinators use e-mail to remind you of activities, make announcements, and get feedback from you.

  • ATTEND THE ORIENTATION: The PALS Orientation/Welcome Party, held at the beginning of each semester, is a great way to learn more about the PALS Program and meet other PALS participants. Attendance is strongly encouraged.
