The following list the promotion requirements that the UT Judo club uses:

  • GOKYU: (5th Class - Yellow Belt)
  • YONKYU: (4th Class - Green Belt)
  • SANKYU: (3rd Class - Brown Belt)
  • NIKYU: (2nd Class - Browm Belt)
  • IKKYU: (1st Class - Brown Belt)
  • SHODAN: (1st Degree - Black Belt)
  • Translations: Japanese to English

GOKYU (5th Class - Yellow Belt)
  1. Good moral character and maturity.
  2. Regular practice and attendance.
  3. Minimum time in grade as Rokkyu - 3 months.
  4. Tournament experience - limited contest experience.  No contest points required.
  5. Ability to demonstrate:
    • Ukemi, Kumikata, Kuzushi, Taisabaki.
    • The DAI-IKKYO (must know all eight throws).
    • 5 Osaekomi Waza (Kesa Gatame, Kata Gatame, Tate Shiho Gatame, Yoko Shiho Gatame, and Kami Shiho Gatame).
    • 1 Shime Waza (Mae - From front).
    • 1 Shime Waza (Ushiro - From rear).
    • 1 Attack against opponent in turtle.

YONKYU (4th Class - Green Belt)
  1. Good moral charcter and maturity.
  2. Regular practice and attendance.
  3. Minimum time in grade as Gokyu
    • Non-Competitor (under 35): 1 year
    • Shiai Competitor: 3 months
  4. Promotional points - 3
  5. Ability to demonstrate:
    • Ukemi, Kumikata, Kuzushi, Taisabaki
    • The DAI-IKKYO and the DAI-NIKYO (must know all 16 throws).
    • 6 Osaekomi Waza (Kesa Gatame, Kata Gatame, Tate Shiho Gatame, Yoko Shiho Gatame, Kami Shiho Gatame, Kuzuri Kesa Gatame, Mune Gatame, and Kuzuri Kami Shiho Gatame).
    • Escapes from at least three of the above hold downs.
    • 2 Shime Waza (Mae - From front).
    • 2 Shime Waza (Ushiro - From rear).
    • 1 Kansetsu Waza.
    • 1 Renraku Waza (Combination attack).
    • 2 Attacks against opponent in turtle.
    • 1 Attack from between opponents legs.

SANKYU (3rd Class - Brown Belt)
  1. Good moral character and maturity.
  2. Regular practice and attendance.
  3. Minimum time in grade as Yonkyu:
    • Non-Competitor: 1 year.
    • Shiai Competitor: 6 months.
  4. Promotional points - 5.
  5. Ability to demonstrate:
    • Ukemi, Kumikata, Kuzushi, Taisabaki.
    • The DAI-IKKYO, DAI-NIKYO, and the DAI-SANKYO (must know all 24 throws).
    • 8 Osaekomi Waza (Kesa Gatame, Kata Gatame, Yoko Shiho Gatame, Kami Shiho Gatame, Tate Shiho Gatame, Mune Gatame, Kuzuri Kesa Gatame, Kuzuri Kami Shiho Gatame).
    • Escapes from at least 4 of the hold downs.
    • 3 Shime Waza (Mae - From front).
    • 3 Shime Waza (Ushiro - From rear).
    • 2 Kansetsu Waza.
    • 1 Renraku Waza (Combination attack).

    • 8 Osaekomi Waza (Kesa Gatame, Kata Gatame, Yoko Shiho Gatame, Kami Shiho Gatame, Tate Shiho Gatame, Mune Gatame, Kuzuri Kesa Gatame, Kuzuri Kami Shiho Gatame).
    • Escapes from at least 4 of the hold downs.
    • 5 Shime Waza (Mae - From front).
    • 5 Shime Waza (Ushiro - From rear).
    • 4 Kansetsu Waza.

    • The DAI-IKKYO, DAI-NIKYO, DAI-SANKYO, DAI-YONKYO, and the DAI-GOKYU (must know all 40 throws).
    • 8 Osaekomi Waza (Kesa Gatame, Kata Gatame, Yoko Shiho Gatame, Kami Shiho Gatame, Tate Shiho Gatame, Mune Gatame, Kuzuri Kesa Gatame, Kuzuri Kami Shiho Gatame).
    • Escapes from at least 4 of the hold downs.
    • 5 Shime Waza (Mae - From front).
    • 5 Shime Waza (Ushiro - From rear).
    • 4 Kansetsu Waza.

    • Non-Competitor (under 35): 4 years.
    • Shiai Competitor: 6 months.
  4. Promotional points - 20.
  5. Ability to demonstrate:
    • Ukemi, Kumikata, Kuzushi, Taisabaki.
    • The DAI-IKKYO, DAI-NIKYO, and the DAI-SANKYO (must know and be able to satisfactorily teach all 40 throws).
    • 8 Osaekomi Waza (Kesa Gatame, Kata Gatame, Yoko Shiho Gatame, Kami Shiho Gatame, Tate Shiho Gatame, Mune Gatame, Kuzuri Kesa Gatame, Kuzuri Kami Shiho Gatame).
    • Escapes from at least 4 of the hold downs.
    • 5 Shime Waza (Mae - From front).
    • 5 Shime Waza (Ushiro - From rear).
    • 4 Kansetsu Waza.
    • 3 Renraku Waza (Combination attack).
