Austin Motorola Marathon February 16, 2003 | |

This was my first marathon, so I had heard plenty of stories but didn't know what to expect for myself. I knew I would feel great until at least the half marathon mark. And I did, but once we hit the wind (6th street), I had a tough time keeping motivated. But all the people cheering really helped and kept me upbeat the entire race. Of course, an IT band injury sprouted around mile 15 but I didn't let that stop me from picking up a mimosa shot! My toughest time came, obviously, between miles 22-25. My knee hurt terribly but I tried to ignore it. I was smart enough to stay with my Austin Fit pace coach for the last 10K and he really motivated me to finish with the group. I know my story is probably typical of most marathoners, but it was definitely a new experience for me. I'm already thinking about how I can shave off 15 minutes for next year's race!
It was definitely good having friends and family out there to support me through it along the way. I advise everyone to bribe a few friends to come out to cheer.
And what's up with those finisher's jackets? When I went to get mine, all they had left were Larges and Extra Larges. I just looked at the girl and said "well this won't do me any good." I'm going to complain for sure.
