FEBRUARY 2009

Minutes from meeting 2/2/2009
Attendance: Jackson Liang, Brooks Robinson, Deena Walker, Michelle Naugle, Bailey Kermath

Concerns: NGSA email not sending to all members. Deena will look into it

Scheduling Social Events:
  • Feb 20-21st, Fri. & Sat: recruitment weekend, Buffalo Billiards, band?
  • March 28-29th, Sat. & Sun: camping/hiking at Enchanted Rock
  • April 17th, Friday: Kareoke night
  • May 8th, Friday, last class day: Happy Hour

Recruitment:
  • Sent out email to find ~15 buddies
  • Need to plan activities for Saturday
    • kayaking
    • disc golf
    • Alamo drafthouse
    • pool/bowling somewhere
    • suggestion: only have one activity for everyone to do together?

Outreach Events:
1. Explore UT
  • MARCH 7th, 11am-5pm-- "Get to Know Your Brain"
  • Deena has reserved 2 tables, one for each activity, through Holly Hunt.
  • Current volunteers: Jackson Liang, Megan Tipps, Michelle Naugle, Brooks Robinson, Dean Kirson, Deena Walker, Bailey Kermath
  • Deena to send out sign-up sheet.
  • Supplies will be ordered from

2.New Kid's Outreach Events
  • Current volunteers: Dean Kirson, Scott Davis, Lindsay Dickey, Brooks Robinson, Jackson Liang, Michelle Naugle, Deena Walker, Bailey Kermath
  • want about 10-15 people
  • Current Contacts:
    1. UT Elementary, Mary Miller (UT Outreach Head)
      • can borrow their resources (books, reusable items)
    2. Safe Place after-school, Evette and Veronica
    3. HeartHouse after-school, Shelly-Marie Rios (Volunteer Coordinator)
      • willing to give a visual presentation to the group

  • Funding Resources
    1. Diversity and Community Scholarship $150/semester
    2. HEB $500, must do 2 semesters in advance
    3. Dan Johnston -- INS support
  • should get testimonials from the kids.

Committee Reports:
  • Need new GSA representative that can meet Tues/Thurs. 4-6pm
  • Julio Rojas/Deena Walker submitted GSA proposal, requested $451
  • Need someone to go to the Thursday Feb. 19th meeting (when they will decide the funding) to support NGSA
  • This money will go towards Explore UT 2009

Website:
  • Jackson Liang now in charge of website
  • Will go up on Friday, Feb. 6th
  • Need to send email to ask for web content (eg. representative proposals, etc.)
  • Need pictures from events
  • Luke Magalsky offers to help design the NGSA website (free!), if needed.

OCTOBER 2008

Minutes from NGSA 9/29/08
Attendance: Deena Walker, Brian Welsh, Julio Rojas, Bailey Kermath, Megan Tipps, Michelle Naugle

- Bake sale to be held Friday October 3
  • Workers and timeslots discussed
  • Estimated 300 items for sale
  • Bailey finished the fliers and passed them around to be distributed
  • Deena will send an e-mail reminder through Krystal and Chris

- Student Mentoring - Deena
  • Jennifer Hargraves is the contact
  • Possible opportunity to speak about neuroscience to local students

- Retreat Evaluations - Deena
  • A summery of all comments was sent to Dan
  • On a scale of 1-5: accomadations - 4.8, Transportation - 4.3, Food - 4.6, Talks - 4.3
  • Feedback was very positive overall
  • Total cost was $1840
  • Next year - adjust transportation, possibly a closer location

- Budget
  • Account currently has $550
  • Planned fundraiser with NGSA mugs

- NGSA bowling - Deena
  • Monday November 10th - dollar bowling night
  • Evite will go out a couple of weeks before hand (Megan)

- Curriculum Committee - Gayathri via Deena
  • Feedback is being collected from first year students on new Principles classes
  • Negative comments about organization of course have been voiced

- EC Committee update - Brian
  • INS initiative has been passed
  • Members were voted on individually
  • The next meeting will welcome new members (post-docs)

- GSA - Julio
  • Funding proposal - we plan to submit for Explore UT (spring)
  • Apply for funding for next year's retreat
  • Housing survey is underway for graduate student housing
  • GSA has voted to support the motion to provide "domestic partners" with the same benefits received by spouses

- Website - Michelle
  • Plan to meet to finalize website plans by the first week of October

- Happy Hour - Deena
  • October 10th - 6pm
  • Deena and Bailey will save tables

SEPTEMBER 2008

Meeting Minutes for 8-5-08

Retreat (scheduled for Sept 12-13) - Deena
  • Form and downpayment for the retreat location - Deena and Michelle
  • 14 people can stay overnight - 20 may attend during the day
  • E-vite will be sent on Aug 20th (Megan) - strict enforcement of overnight numbers and carpooling
  • Speekers: Kris Singletary, Jascha Pohl, Paul Mathews, Angela Osburn, Kit/Monica/Bas (Roast) - other possibilities: Luisa Scott, Jenni Greeson, post-docs from new faculty labs
  • Proposed schedule: Friday night BBQ with "roast" - 14 ppl overnight - Saturday - 5 student talks, one panel discussion, free time

Meetings for Fall semester
  • Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. at JP's Java

  • The second Friday of every month starting in October
