History of Pi Sigma Alpha

Pi Sigma Alpha was founded at the University of Texas in 1920 and is the national honor society for undergraduate and graduate students of political science, with over 440 chapters in colleges and universities across the United States. Our texas chapter was resurrected a few years ago after dismantling in the late 1980's. The rebuilding of the Texas chapter has been a great success. In fact, we won Best Chapter award in 1995/96. We are close with the government honors program and many of our members do a thesis with the program their senior year.

How to Become a Member and Member Benefits

The society is open to Government Majors who have completed twelve hours of government courses, have a 3.0 Government GPA, and have a 3.0 overall GPA. Students are usually sent a letter at the beginning of each semester inviting them to join. If you qualify, but did not receive a letter, come by the Government Advising Office (BUR 437) to pick-up an application.

All members receive a certificate of membership and permanent enrollment in the society's membership rolls. Because Pi Sigma Alpha is a member of the association of college honor societies, the United States Office of Personnel Management guarantees a higher entry-level grade to our members. Members can also wear medallions to graduation ceremonies. Moreover, Pi Sigma Alpha gives members a chance to gain leadership experience by becoming a chapter officer. There are also numerous opportunities to win scholarships and network with fellow government majors.

Each semester we have professors come and speak to us on their areas of expertise. We hold resume workshops, pizza parties, and honors symposiums. We offer our members free mock LSAT and GRE tests. At the end of each semester we hold a banquet and hand out new member certificates.
