PSA Members have been active in many Pagan Community demonstrations
in the Central Texas Area,
Here's proof!
On
Labor Day, 1999, A bigoted minister, Rev. Jack Harvey, had a "March Against
Wickedness." Rev. Harvey had been quoted as saying that "all witches should
be killed" and that paganism is "incredibly wrong." He also claimed to
have a member of his congregation carry a handgun to protect their children
from Pagans. His antics came after the Sacred Well Congregation at Ft.
Hood gained the national media's eye, and consequently led to Harvey receiving
publicity of his own. He planned his "March Against Wickedness" to specifically
target paganism, and chose to bring his march to a small pagan shop in
Corpus Cove, TX, called the New Age Connection. Fearing violence
due to Harvey's vehement ranting, the shop owner and friends planned a
"peaceful [...] stand", to contrast the bigoted leanings of Rev. Harvey.
The Lady Liberty League
sent an alert via e-mail, informing Pagans across the nation of the events
in Corpus Cove.
Two
PSA members attended the stand in Corpus Cove. Melinda, our Paper Pusher,
and Lance, our Web Shaman. They were joined by over two hundred Pagans,
Atheists, Agnostics, and even Christians who stood with them, promoting
religious tolerance. Out-numbered over four to one, Harvey's congregation
didn't know what to think of this huge Pagan presence. Their message of
hate was quickly overcome by our message of acceptance and love. Melinda
and Lance can both be seen in the first photograph, lining up as Harvey's
congregation pulled up in their church bus. In the second photo, Lance
is seen behind a mass of Pagans, giving a sense of how many people attended
this event.
On
the Forth of July, 1999, there was another Pagan Demonstration. This event
took place at a small park in Austin, TX. The event's purpose was to demonstrate
that Pagans are citizens, too, and that our constitutional right to worship
cannot be infringed upon. This event was in response to Congressman Bob
Barr's (R- Georgia) attempt to pass legislation that would prohibit Wiccan
ceremonies on US Army bases. This attempt came after a (surprisingly positive)
report in the Austin American Statesman about soldiers in Ft. Hood
who held Wiccan rituals on base. The event consisted of several speakers,
a public ritual, and flyers from such organizations as PagansVote.org.
PSA members in attendance included Ryan, April (in photo), and Lance. A
fun time was had by all and an important message was sent to our representatives:
"Pagans Have A Voice Too!"
This page will increase whenever a PSA member attends a Pagan demonstration (and takes pictures.)
