Take Back the Night
Friday, April 19, 2002
7:00pm on the Main Mall
It takes one night to understand something people only whisper about.
Rape.
For an evening each year in April, survivors of sexual assault are not just statistics on a page, but the faces and voices of individuals. Take Back the Night is an event that summons power and strength for survivors of sexual assault and for those who want to help fight against it.
The event takes place on college campuses and in communities throughout the world. UT's evening will feature songs, performances, community and student speakers and a survivor speakout. At the speakout, individuals are encouraged to stand up in front of a supportive audience and refuse to be silent about their sexual assault, sharing what they choose to about their experience.
On this night we rally to reclaim the streets, which for many years have been sources of fear and violence.
We rally to empower men and women to bring an end to sexual assault.
We rally to demand that the perpetrators of sexual violence be held responsible for their actions and be made to change.
We rally as a united campus and community to protest a horrible crime.
We rally to promote awareness of attitudes, beliefs and behaviors, which perpetuate sexual violence.
We rally for the right to live without violence.
Join us.
