Ensey Regatta

Baylor University, September 14th
In true fashion for the Ensey Regatta, the wind was less than favorable. At 9am
there was very patchy wind of less than 2 knots from the South. On-shore and on
water postponement had the first race starting at about 11am with variable
south winds of 3 to 10 knots. At the end of the A fleet's 4th race, the winds
became very light and variable. The last two B fleet races were sailed in 0 to 5
knots patchy breeze. Over all we feel the regatta went smoothly as it could for
not having a second motorboat and with the wind conditions.

2002 SEISA Sloop Championship

Hosted by Corinthian Sailing Club

Coordinated by Baylor University

2002 SEISA Sloop Champs were sailed in Flying Scots on White Rock Lake in

Dallas. True to Baylor traditions, the regatta was sailed in light and variable

winds from the East.

There was a major set of protests with the 5th race's start. KU protested UT for

causing KU to luff to avoid collision in a port-starboard situation. UT

protested TAMUG for not providing room to duck behind obstruction KU, thus

causing the situation with KU. TAMUG protested UT for hitting them during their

tack to avoid KU. The jury found TAMUG in the wrong; because TAMUG did not tell

the Race committee they had yellow flagged for the event, they were

disqualified from race 5, causing the regatta winning 1st place for Tamug to

tossed, thus giving UT the overall win.

Congrats UT. good luck in New York!

Frozen Hate Mission Regatta

White Rock Lake

Dallas, Texas

Hosted by SMU Sailing Team

It was a busy day at Corinthian Sailing Club.  The State Fair Regatta was

concurrently run with Frozen Hate on separate courses.  The total amount of

boats on the water was near 100.  The morning started with temperatures in the

low 60's and a southerly breeze at 10-15.  Eight teams participated including

two from Texas A&M.  It was agreed that TAMU-2 would be allowed to compete,

but they would not be considered for qualifiers.  With seven boats, a bye was

given to each team through the rotation.

As the day progressed, the temperature rose into the 80's with a gradually

decreasing breeze out of the southeast.  By late afternoon, the wind

disappeared completely, causing the last set of A & B races to be

abandoned.  This left TAMU-1 and SMU without a bye on the day.  Average

finishes were put in place of byes for the other teams to even the scoring.

Kathryn Hammond

               University of Texas at Austin

                  November 26-27, 2002

Five teams attended the second ever Kathryn Hammond Intersectional at UT.

Saturday started with a wet forcast. The weather stayed wet and cool for

the whole day. 22 races were sailed in winds ranging from 4-11 knots. The

weather kept pleasure boats away so Lake Travis was calm. Races were

sailed on both Windward-Leeward and Triangle courses. UT's FJs were used

for the event.

Sunday greeted sailors with warmer temperatures and a dry but overcast sky.

12 Races were completed by 2:30 to end with 17 A and B races. Winds were

3-8 knots with large oscillations. Racing was close, with a one point

differencce for first and a tie for third. No protest were filed either

day

The UT team would like to thank all of the teams, our PRO Vic Manning for

running some great racing and Austin YC for their continued support.

2002-2003 ICSA North American Sloop Championship

for the Cornelius Shields, Sr. Trophy

Hosted by: New York Yacht Club and Brown University

 November 1-3, 2002

> Friday (Day One): Competitors showed up between 8:30 and 9:00am to cold

temperatures and a building breeze out of the W/SW. The race committee moved

the course north of the Newport Bridge after the practice race due to the

increasing breeze and swell. Three races were sailed on W2 courses. The new

race area had a W/SW breeze of 14-20 knots with some higher gusts. Two

breakdowns (a mastcrane

> and a halyard) occurred during the practice time. One file for redress and

no protests. Very close racing between the top five. Five races are planned

for tomorrow.

>

> Saturday (Day Two): Day two was even colder and windier than the first day

with west winds of 15-22 knots with some larger puffs. Four races were

sailed today with the last two non-spinnaker due to three ripped spinnakers,

two torn

> mainsails, two broaches including a great death roll by Navy, and

full-planing, hold-on for dear life conditions at times downwind. All

courses were W2. One protest involving Brown and Charleston resulted in a

DSQ for the Cougars.

> Hobart, Charleston, Wisconsin, and Minnesota each won a race today. Top

four are tight. Three races planned for tomorrow with rebuilt spinnakers.

>

> Sunday (Day Three): Competitors were treated to cold temperatures once

again but a dying breeze out of the north.  Current was a major factor in

each race.  The breeze slowly went left all day with occasional puffs from

both sides.  Hobart, Brown, and URI all had tough races, while Minnesota,

USC, and Navy improved in the lighter stuff.  Charleston sailed consistent

enough to win with a second in the last race to Hobart’s eight.

Cougars win the tiebreaker.  Racing was finished by 1pm and awards were

given out at the NYYC at 2pm.  No protests, breakdowns, or damage today.

Baldwin Wood Regatta
Tulane University

New Orleans, LA

October 19-20, 2002

On Saturday, sixteen races were sailed on Lake Ponchatrain with 7-12 knots

coming from the East South East.  Because of the wind direction there was no

chop.  There were blue skies and it was about 80 degrees.  Sunday, races were

postponed in the morning and then abandoned because there was no wind.

Saturday's results became the final results.  No protests were filed.

TAMU Women's regatta report:

I would also like to compliment all of our SEISA women for making such fine work

out of the breezy conditions.  Nice Job, girls!

1 protest filed and then withdrawn, we ran just short of a full rotation due to

the conditions.  A spare boat was filled with spares for some good practice.

Breeze on!  we saw 15 building to just over 20kts by the end of the day.  It was

gusty and a little shifty.  Girls rotated off of a drifting 22 ft sloop to sail

windward leewards set in the morning, after lunch, triangles and olympics were

raced.

Super ultra special thanks goes to our Aggie Alumni PRO Mary C. (01) and Judge

Vicki R. (01) who ran an excellent set of races.  A Texas sized thanks also

goes out to David Knapp for driving the crash boat, setting marks, shuttling

people..and saving Josh and I when we sank a jon boat...long story.

                       PCIYRA North-South
 Intersectional
ICSA Fall Pacific Coast Dinghy Champs

                              November 16-17, 2002

REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS: Saturday: Beautiful clear skies and temperatures in

the high 70's. Lake Cachuma in the Santa Barbara hills,(near the

Ranches' of Pop Star Michael Jackson and former President Ronald Regan)

is an extremely picturesque location. An early morning offshore flow

faded before racing began and the Race Committee struggled to get races

off all day with the breeze shifting around the clock and dying often. 2

Races were held in each division mostly in breeze from 2-6 knots. A

JV/Alumni fleet of nearly 30 boats results will follow later this week.

Saturday Night: Campfires, RV Parties, and all sorts of outdoor social

engagement were enjoyed by the students, coaches and alumni of West

Coast (and Midwestern) college sailing. UC Berkeley boasted the largest

contingent with nearly forty current college sailors and alumni

including a former All-American from the 50's.

Sunday: Another beautiful day reaching well into the 80's. This time the

breeze cooperated by filling at the traditional California civilized

hour of about 11:00 a.m. allowing a full days racing in 5-10 knots. 6

Races in each division were held.

A big thanks goes out to the UC Santa Barbara, all student run, team for

hosting an excellent event. Dana Jones and Nick Gazulis in particular

are to be thanked for organizing this some what complicated affair.

Respectfully Submitted,

Michael H. Segerblom

PCIYRA Graduate Secretary
