What is Muslim Voices?
Muslim Voices is a literary magazine published by the Society for Islamic Awareness (SIA) at UT Austin. The magazine aims to reflect the diversity of experiences, thoughts, and concerns of Muslims living in the West. It publishes contributions from all UT students, faculty, and alumni (Muslims and Non-Muslims). With this platform, our hope is to connect especially the Muslim students on campus and foster a unity within our diversities, while providing the general readers a refreshing perspective on issues surrounding Muslims and Islam. Just about any type of literary work is fair game - from poetry, artwork, photography, to articles and editorials. The only criterion is that the work should relate to Muslim experiences and/or contemporary issues relating to Islam. So far, we have published two issues of Muslim Voices. Take a look at them. Your feedback is most welcome!

The Title
If you look at our published issues, notice a few things about the title and the concept behind it: The words 'muslims' and 'voices' are in lower caps and instead of 'voice', we chose the plural term 'voices.' The idea is that the magazine represents the diversity of Muslim voices, and we make no claim that any one of them is the authoritative or final voice. This is because we see this magazine as a public space that gives exposure to various voices and experiences of common Muslims, and with that, we facilitate a dialogue among them. The choice of 'muslim' also indicates that this magazine is intended to serve all Muslims on campus, transcending our differences based on sectarian, ethnic, or national identities. Our inspiration is derived from the Quranic verse that says, "Who hear advice and follow the best thereof. Those are whom God has guided, and they are the ones endued with understanding." (Chapter 39, Verse 18).

Guidelines
The guidelines are simple:

1. The work should relate to contemporary issues related to Islam and Muslim experiences in the West.
2. The work should contain ideas and voices that are creative, original, investigative, and independent of prejudice.
3. The work should be respectful toward other people's beliefs and views, and be considerate of the basic Islamic values.
