 About SIA

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Welcome to the Society for Islamic Awareness (SIA), a vibrant Muslim students organization at the University of Texas at Austin .

SIA is founded with the concern that we Muslims need to speak for ourselves and promote awareness of the true teachings of Islam and the rich and diverse experiences of Muslims around the world. We believe that the true face of Islam can be best presented by highlighting the combined teachings of the Quran and the Ahlul Bayt , as instructed by the Holy Prophet himself.

Our approach is academic, and we facilitate exchange of ideas and dialogue on social, political, and historical issues relevant to Islam and Muslim experiences today. We seek to build a well-informed and active student community on campus.

SIA members come from a variety of backgrounds. Our various activities serve as venues for connecting people, generating ideas, encouraging understanding, and promoting Islamic values of God-consciousness, universal humanity, justice and social responsibility. Take a look at our regular activities and major events sections on this site for details.

SIA also publishes the Muslim Voices , a literary magazine focused on contemporary issues related to Islam and Muslim experience in the West. The magazine includes works that are creative, original, investigative, and independent of bias and prejudice.

We invite you to explore this site. See the different resources and information regarding our goals and activities. We encourage you to join this spirited community of Muslim students in our chai-chats (weekly discussions), supplication/spiritual gatherings, and social get-togethers held on a regular basis. Those wishing to further their intellectual and spiritual selves will find themselves right at home with the rest of us!

Feel free to drop us a line at sia.utexas@gmail.com with your comments and questions.

Wish you the best!
