Muslim students at the University of Texas held a sit-in Friday night to denounce the violence in Iraq.
Days of attacks between Shiites and Sunnis have resulted in a number of killings since last week's bombing of a Shiite shrine.
Prayers and speeches from students and other community leaders called for solidarity amongst all Muslims.
"We oppose any violence or any injustice in our name. We will not stand by holy sites being desecrated. We will not stand by people being murdered senselessly," Aiman Janmohamed of the Society for of the Islamic Awareness said.
The Society for Islamic Awareness, Muslim Students Association and Pakistani Students Association organized the event.
