Friday, November 17th Friday Astronomy Meeting This Friday, we'll have Dr. Volker Bromm, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Astronomy. Dr. Bromm is interested in the first stars, quasars, and metals of the universe.

Thursday, November 16th The mysteries of whales: At the next ESI Science Outreach Lecture, Dr. Stephen Palumbi, a renowned marine biologist and professor at Stanford, will discuss how he uses genetic techniques to estimate historic whale populations and how his findings play an important role in decisions of the International Whaling Commission (IWC). SURGe will be there volunteering, and we need your help! If you can attend, please register on our volunteer signup page.

Friday, November 10th Ultrasound Microscopy This Friday we will be having Dr. Stanislav Emelianov come talk to us about his research in biomedical engineering with ultrasound microscopy and medical imaging.

Friday, November 3rd, 3 - 5 PM Summer research starts with URP. At our next meeting, Dr. Sarah Simmons, with UT's CNS Undergraduate Research Program, will be talking about summer research opportunities like internships, work, volunteering, etc. Come and be inspired to get involved in research. This meeting is two hours long, and you must register to attend.

Sunday, November 5th Race For The Cure We will again be helping to fund cancer research this year by attending Race For The Cure. If you can help us by running in November, join by going to our team page and clicking "Join SURGe." We are doing the "Adult Untimed (13 and older) for Teams / $25.00" event. You can delete the $200 fundraising goal because we will not be participating in that. Then, fill out your info. Check out our photos of the race from last year.

Friday, October 27th Not just another day: This Friday is Funday. Instead of our usual meeting location, we will be enjoying karaoke, pump, games, and plenty of food (more than pizza for a day like this) at The Quadrangle Room in The Union from 4 to 6 PM.

Tuesday, October 10th Opinions, please. As you know, SURGe charges no dues to its members. In addition to raising funds by selling plants, we are trying out a new system where SURGe will receive money for completing surveys. If you can donate some time and product opinions, please contact Ron Yan.

Friday, October 13th Plants make decisions, too. And not just because it's Friday the 13th. Graduate student Antonio Gonzalez will be speaking to us this week about his reserach focusing on cell fate decision-making processes in plants. Mr. Gonzalez, who studies Arabidopsis thaliana, says, "Much of my research efforts have focused on determining the genes involved in regulating the various epidermal fate pathways. To this end I employ a variety of molecular and genetic techniques such as mutant screens and phenotype analysis, genetic engineering and creation of transgenics, gene silencing, gene tagging, gene expression profiling, and more."

Friday, October 6h, 3 - 5 PM Lab Safety Certification! SURGe's Laboratory Safety Certification meeting, to be held in the usual PAI 3.02, will be a presentation by UT's Office of Environmental Health and Safety of their two-hour "Lab Safety Class." All participating students will receive a certificate of official lab safety certification. To attend, you must register for the meeting online.

Friday, October 6h, 9 AM - 4 PM Plant Sale SURGe sells plants every week to prevent members from needing to pay dues. In addition to our weekly plant sales at the greenhouse, we occasionally hold larger ones elsewhere. If you can volunteer for our next plant sale at West Mall, to be held from 9 AM to 4 PM, please contact Ron Yan.

Thursday, October 5th, 5:30 PM Is Climate Change Increasing Hurricane Activity? Be sure to attend Thursday's ESI Science Outreach Lecture, where Dr. Kerry A. Emanuel, an atmospheric science professor from MIT will be discussing if the recent increase in hurricanes is due to climate change or heating of the oceans. And if you can help, please signup for ESI Pre-Lecture Volunteering in WEL, 5:30 - 7:15 PM. The talk starts at 7 PM.

Dr. Iverson has worked with antibody and enzyme engineering with an emphasis on creating better methods for improving protein function, developing and patenting several new technologies. Recent successes include (a) the production of improved antibodies capable of neutralizing toxins from pathogens such as anthrax and (b) altering the substrate specificity of an E. coli protease. These projects are carried out in collaboration with Dr. George Georgiou.
