- Next Wednesday, the 2nd of March, we are having a research shadowing tour of Dr. Chris Jolly's lab.
Dr. Chris Jolly is in the Nutritional Sciences department. His current
research focus is examining the influence of aging and diet on immune
function with special emphasis on lipid metabolism and signal
transduction.
Dr. Jolly is very enthusiastic about undergraduate researchers, because
he became interested in his career at the undergraduate level as well.
If you are thinking about a career in research, he will have many
encouraging words for you.
The tour will be from 2:30-3:30 p.m., and we will meet ten minutes before in PAI 3.04 to go as a group.
A EUREKA profile is a prerequisite for the research shadowing program.
If you haven't already filled out your profile, do so at http://www.utexas.edu/research/eureka/
Click "create your account/edit existing account".
After filling out your profile, email Mitali Kagal at mitali.kagal@gmail.com with "Jolly Lab" in the subject to reserve a spot. Ten spots will be given out on a first come, first serve basis.
Thank you.
- Dear SURGers,
Your help is needed any time (8am-7pm) this Saturday, February 19th!
The College of Natural Sciences is hosting the regional tournament of
the Science Olympiad Outreach competition for local high school and
junior high school students. For those of you unfamiliar with the
program, Science Olympiad is a science and engineering competition held
nationwide to promote knowledge of and interest in science. Regionals
provide a venue for practice as well as determine which schools will
move on to the next level of competition.
Visit the website, to VOLUNTEER (and learn more about the program, positions available, etc.):
http://www.utexas.edu/cons/urp/SO/main.html
No experience is required. We have positions for general
volunteers, test proctors, graders, and/or writers, and runners.
There are slots available –even more than are listed on the website. We
need lots of help, so if you have time please volunteer for this
rewarding experience !
LUNCH will be served as well as SNACKS throughout the day.
It is lots of fun!
Science Olympiad experience will count toward volunteer hours for any
organization needing service hours. And it will certainly count toward
being an ACTIVE SURGe MEMBER !!!

- Hey SURGers. With the start of the new semester, we've already had our
opening, introductory meeting with some announcements by Sarah Simmons.
A few days ago the popular science panel discussed common
misconceptions in science, and where it's headed in the future with
some interesting, more realistic commentary on the state of the union.
Most importantly (at this time, at least), SURGe, with special thanks to The University Co-Op, presents the sixth annual SURF.
SURF is a fair with a ton of information about undergraduate research.
It'll be held at the Lone Star and Quad from 4 - 6 this Friday, the
11th. Even more attractive is the free t-shirt that the first 100
people who sign up will receive. You can find out more at the SURF website.
And speaking of attraction, the meeting the following Friday (the 18th)
is going to be a Valentine's Day special. The speaker will discuss a
topic certain to grab your attention -- sex... at least sexual
behavior, mating choices, and the like. It'll be held in the usual PAI
3.02 at the usual 4:00 PM.
After the sex & love meeting, SURGe will hold a special movie night
starting at 5:30, also in PAI 3.02. The details are still developing,
but keep up-to-date with this website for more news. For now, we know
it will involve free food and snacks. If you haven't already, sign up for the email list, which will keep you up-to-date as well.
Amarah has passed down the webmastering to me, so over the next
semester hopefully the site will develop even more. The calendar has
been updated to reflect what's already planned in the upcoming months,
and the member pages will be updated next. Feel free to contact me
using the "Email webmaster" link on your left.
