Duties
Research Shadowing: Make contact with professors who head active research labs on campus. I attempt to set up tours in labs the many science fields represented in the SURGe organization: Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Astronomy, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Psychology and more. I have enjoyed getting to know the members of SURGe and the UT faculty and staff through this leadership position. FRC member: work in the greenhouse, no nonsense plant sales, and volunteering my time with the numerous events SURGe sponsors and participates in on campus
Education
Attended elementary, middle and high school in Kingwood, TX (NE Houston). Then went on to UT San Antonio for a short (yet long) Freshman year and then came to UT Austin where I am quite happy. Despite my Austin bliss, I am going to be studying in Cholula, Puebla, Mexico for the Fall 2007 semester to finally learn to SPEAK Spanish. I have been struggling with my ability to converse in the language for a while even though I have studied in the classroom and understand a good portion of what I hear. I am thrilled about my upcoming experiences while attending La Universidad de Las Americas (UDLA).
Research
I have not participated in a research project to date. My original intention was to go to Mexico and become involved with a field study marine turtle research project. I would have been speaking primarily English if I would have pursued that opportunity. I insist upon learning Spanish (my first, second language) as a young person, so I am tackling that now. There is a great possibility that I will return to Baja, Mexico next summer to become involved with that project. Depending on how everything turns out, I might pursue a dishwasher job in a lab on the UT campus, you can too!!!
Extras
Also a member of Women in Medicine. I work at Devenir Aesthetics/Austin Dermcare under Dr. Hector Morales. I am thoroughly enjoying myself there and learning tremendous amounts about the skin, the products and medications to maintain healthy skin habits, the business of a dermatology practice and always developing my skills with patient care. When I'm not schoolin', working, volunteering or sleeping, I like cooking, photography, plants, fish/aquariums, watching other people play music and (other people) dance, water skiing and wakeboarding, snow skiing and boarding (duh!) and throwing sharp objects… I love playing darts.
Past SURGe Experience
Fundraising committee member: 2005 - Current
Research Shadowing Co-officer: Current
Aspirations
I will attend medical school most likely in Texas. Following my many years of formal education, I want to co-own a large dermatology practice in Colorado. I want to be a part of a large practice so that I have the ability to travel globally to share my passion for knowledge and acquired skills in science with people in need. And, like everyone else, I want to have a pet dolphin (not captive, just a friend).
SURGe has plenty of great members. Check out other interesting people at the committees home page.
