How to score a Match
When scoring for a tennis match, you really don't need to know exactly how to score or to call the lines. Don't worry! The main thing to do is to listen to the umpire, his calls, and his score that he calls out. But basics should be known in case you misunderstand, don't hear, or aren't paying attention (!) to the umpire's call.
Sets
- Men's and Women's Doubles matches are played as pro-sets. This means that the first doubles team to reach 8 games in a match wins. If the score is tied at 7-7, either a tie breaker is used, or the match continues until someone wins by two games (i.e. 9-7).
- A Men's Singles match is played the best three out of five sets. Each set is played until a player gets six games, at least two games ahead, of the other player. However, if the score is tied at 5-5, the players play until they reach seven games, two ahead. If the match is tied at 6-6, they go into a tiebreaker.
Example: A player can win a set by scoring, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5, or 7-6 (with a tiebreaker)
- A Women's Singles match is played the best two out of three sets. The scoring remains the same as the Men's matches, only the difference of two sets wins the match versus three.
Games
Basically, tennis scoring proceeds from 0 (love) to 15 to 30 to 40 to game.
- Note which player is serving the game. The server's score is always announced first.
- Watch for whom the first point is made. A player loses the point by missing the ball, hitting it into the net or hitting it out of bounds. A server loses the point immediately if he or she double-faults - fails to hit the ball in the service square after two attempts.
- Listen for the score from the umpire. The first score is 15. A score of zero is "love." If the server makes the point, the score is "15-love." If the other player makes the point, the score is "love-15."
- Note that a player must be ahead by two points to win the game. If the game score progresses to 40-40, or "40-all," a player must gain the advantage ("40-ad" or "ad-40"), and then score the next point to win the game. If the player with the advantage does not score the next point, the score goes back to 40-all.

An Example Score
The score here is Texas 40-0 (love) for the game. Texas is also up one set, 6-1. If Texas wins this next point, they win the second set and the match.
