April 9, 1999 -- Texans For Israel, the student Zionist organization at the University of Texas at Austin was named "Best Political Organization" at the University of Texas at Austin for the 1998-99 academic year.

The annual award, given by the UT Leadership Board, is recognized as one of the most prestigious honors granted by the largest University in the United States. This year 717 student organizations were eligible to apply for the recognition, and winners are selected in eight different categories: cultural, departmental/academic, political/activist, professional, recreational, service, social, and spirit.

TFI Co-president Jason Schwartz attributed the organization's success to its active membership and close relationships with partner organizations.

"Since TFI is such an informal organization it allows our members to really take part in programs that interest them," Schwartz said. "Of course the support we get from AIPAC, Hamagshimim, Hillel, and other groups helps remind us that what we do effects more than just the UT campus."

In addition to TFI's monthly coffeehouse discussions and attendence at many regional and national conferences, UTLB listed the incredible Israel Block Party and attempts at opening a dialogue with Arab Student on campus among TFI's many accomplishments.

Swing Out, initially began in 1922, fell victim to the rebellions of the 1960s. In 1989, the UT Leadership Board brought back the tradition, broadening the scope of Swing Out to include all student organizations on campus. It is an opportunity for student organizations, and the students that drive them, to be honored for their commitment, leadership, and excellence. Swing Out winners are recognized at a campus-wide ceremony, and their achievement is commemorated on a plaque in the "Swing Out Award Wall" at the Students Services Building.

Texans For Israel is a nonpartisan organization that serves as a forum for students who share a common interest in Israel and a strong, mutually-beneficial US-Israel relationship. TFI sponsors regular events on campus including: pro-Israel lobbying, holiday celebrations, study abroad fairs, voter registration drives, lecture series, and educational activities. TFI maintains close relationships with Members of Congress, state and local officials, University faculty and staff, various campus and national organizations, and the Israeli consulate in Houston.
