The House
TriDelta was founded in 1888 by Sarah Ida Shaw and
Eleanor Dorcas Pond. There were six national women's chapters at
the time: Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Delta
Gamma, Alpha Phi, and Gamma Phi Beta. The two founders thought there
needed to be a new group of women who "shall be kind alike
to all and think more of a girl's inner self and character than
of her personal appearance." Thus, at Boston University at
the beginning of the semester in 1889, Delta Delta Delta initiated
11 women, bringing the founding class to 18.
The Theta Zeta Chapter
of TriDelta was founded on February 23, 1912. The local club was
called Sigma Alpha Chi because two of the members dated men from
the fraternities, Sigma Chi and a Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The local
club petitioned Nationals for a charter in April, 1911. In November,
the charter was granted, and initiation was postponed until February,
1912 because of exams and university-wide spinal meningitis quarantine.
16 members from Southwestern assisted the initiation of the Theta
Zeta chapter. Theta Zeta became the 5th chapter at UT, behind Kappa
Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Kappa Alpha Theta.
Currently, Theta Zeta
hosts 209 members. 56 women live in the sorority house with our
house mom, Kitt Seay. Our chapter GPA is 3.367, with a panhellenic
rank of # 2. Our chapter philanthropy benefits the children of St.
Jude's Hospital.
