All squads perform well at Head of the Hooch |
This past weekend, Texas Crew sent all four squads to the Head of the Hooch, one of the largest fall regattas in the country. Facing some of the stiffest competition in the region, each team made some impressive showings in their respective events. Highlights included first place finishes in the Women's Club 8+ and Club 4+ as well as first and second in the Men's Club Novice 4+ and first in the Men's College and Club Novice 8+.
Also, the Men's Championship 8+ took 2nd place, and third place finishes included the Men's Lightweight 4+ and 8+.
Texas Crew was very excited to attend this year's regatta, and thanks all their competitors as well as the race officials for an enjoyable weekend. We look forward to racing again next year.

TXC races all squads at Head of the Colorado |
Texas Crew participated in the Head of the Colorado this past weekend on its home water in Austin. This was the third race for the second race of the season for the full varsity squads, and also the first racing experience at the college level for our novice programs. All teams performed very well, bringing home medals in the vast majority of the events entered. We extend our thanks to Austin Rowing Club and all the event's organizers and officials for yet another great experience.
The program is now gearing up for a trip to Tennessee next weekend to race at the Head of the Hooch.

Texas Crew sends Men's 8 and 1x, Women's 4+ to HOCR |
This past weekend, Texas Crew brought three boats to the Head of the Charles, posting good finishes in all three events. Both the Men's Collegiate 8 and Women's Collegiate 4+ finished tenth out of over 30 and 40 entries respectively, and Kris Villamin also represented the team very well, finishing 24th out of over 50 entries. We look forward to seeing much of the competition from these events again in the coming year, and also anticipate sending boats up to Boston again next fall.
The entire team looks to continue its success as it approaches the Head of the Colorado this coming weekend, and the finale of the head racing season at the Head of the Hooch in early November.

Fighting Nutria and Winter Warrior Results |
The 2007 Fighting Nutria regatta, a 5.1 mile race featuring open and collegiate eights had very good competition. The annual race pits the Texas Crew club program against the UT Rowing women's program. Points are awarded for places 1-5. Ties go to the UT Rowing women's program. This was the first year thanks to a little help from ARC/TRC that Texas Crew won the coveted trophy, 11-10.
The 2007 Winter Warrior regatta, contested on the same course features any crew of any size or gender.

Coaches Braisted/Krentler continue to dominate Austin running scene |
Texas Crew's novice men's coaching staff continues to win both on and off the water. Coaches Jon Braisted and Bob Krentler finished 1st and 3rd in the their age bracket over the 12 races of the 2006 Summer Stampede 5k series. Their age group, 25-29 was the most competitive and highly subscribed. At one point places 2nd-4th were tied to the 10th of a second. Braisted eventually ran away with first, while Krentler fought off strong competition for third, two seconds out of second place. This marks the second major running event in Austin where Texas Crew's coaches (who only work out twice a week) finished in the mix for the gold. The previous was the marathon relay, where were it not for David Alviar's weak performance after a solid week of trash talking, we'd have had yet another massive trophy for our mantles. You'd all better come back in shape.

TX Crew Marathon Relay nearly dominates |
4 Texas Crew 248 M/25 3:14:32 7:25/M
Dist. Time Split Name 12k 55:14 7:22/M Bob Krentler 10k 47:53 7:43/M David Alviar 10k 44:24 7:10/M Jon Braisted 5k 25:20 7:55/M Jenna Willey 5k 21:40 6:59/M John Mitrowski
In a truly impressive feat of cross training and age defiance, a mixed team of rowers & coaches ran the 2nd annual Silicon Labs Marathon Relay. TX Crew placed 4th/53 in their division even though coaches Bob Krentler and Jon Braisted work out only 2x a week. They also seem to be pretty fast.
Texas Crew did not realize the race was not chip timed for the first leg. Clearly, this was the fault of nobody besides Jenna Willey who did not read the rules. So, while the first runner wasted *AT LEAST* 60 seconds working his way through moms pushing strollers, that time would have been good enough to finish first out of non pot-hunting teams (similar to some lightweight programs in Georgia.)
After the first two legs, no thanks to David Alviar and his new tattoo, Texas Crew was in 5th place. Thankfully, a heroic effort by Jon Braisted (after an equally heroic performance by Bob Krentler) catapaulted the horns into 2nd place. Jenna Willey's & John Mitrowski's 5ks were exciting as well, as the true competitor in each showed at the finish line. Or something.
Notably, and thankfully, Jenna Willey was able to join the team as a last minute substitution for sissy-boy Robert Freehill. Clearly this worked out for the best, as she probably ran faster than his tiny chicken legs would have anyway.
The quote of the day belongs to John Mitrowski at the finish line. Clearly out of breath, exhausted and happy to be finished, John looked over at his ex coaches and exclaimed simply: "I passed 53 people." We love, love, love, love it.

TX Crew earns one medal at ECAC |
Texas Crew sent four 8+'s to the 2006 ECAC National Rowing invitational regatta. The regattta is the championship for teams that do not offer scholarships. In the past, we have never sent more than one boat. Just the presence of 4x the burnt orange is an accomplishment!
In cold, rainy conditions, Texas Crew managed to bring home one medal from the ECAC national rowing invitational. The men's 2nd Frosh 8 brought home the bronze, even with equiment failure. The bronze for the 2F was a little disappointing given their #1 performance in the heat, but the boat finished up a season where it never failed to medal in any event.
The Men's varsity 8, rowing with a reduced lineup rowed its best in the heats and semis, only to have their final cancelled due to the rainy conditions.
The Men's freshman 8, after a rude awakening in the heat finished 2nd in the petite finals. Next year's guys will remember to bring waterproof and warm clothing when it is suggested!
The Women's novice 8 also finished 2nd in their petite final, a team best.
The crew would like to thank Quality Auto Group for their generous donation that made this trip possible. Visit them at http://www.texasquality.com. Without their support, it would have been cost prohibitive to attend the regatta.

SIRA Results |
This past weekend Texas Crew participated in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta held in Oak Ridge TN. SIRA is our regional championship and one of the largest spring regattas in the country. Texas Crew had the best results that it has ever had at this regatta. TXCrew entered twelve events and reached the grand finals in nine of them. Texas Crew medaled in six events with a bronze in the Men's Novice Light Four, Silver in Men's Novice 4, Men's Varsity Light 4 and Gold in the Men's Frosh/Novice Light 8, Men's Frosh/Novice B 8 and Men's Frosh/Novice 8 (sweeping the Men's Novice 8 races). In addition to the above results the Novice Women's A boat won the Petite Final, our Varsity Men's and Women's 4's had good showings in their events. Also the Novice Women's B boat and a Novice Men's 8 racing in the Junior Varsity Event both had great showings in very difficult events. Finally to end the regatta the Varsity Men's Eight finished sixth after reaching the Grand Final for the first time in over six years.
