Frequently Asked Questions

What is rowing?

Rowing has a proud history of excellence and success. It is one of the original sports in the modern Olympics and the first intercollegiate sport contested in the United States. The first rowing race in the United States was between Harvard and Yale in 1852. At The University of Texas, Texas Crew strives to uphold the honor and traditions of rowing.

I've never rowed. Can I row for Texas Crew?

Yes! Most members of Texas Crew are walk-ons. In fact, most collegiate/national team rowers never rowed before college. Our coaches are experienced at teaching first-time rowers.

When do we practice?

Varsity squads and the Novice Women's Squad practice at 5:15 a.m. MTWThF and 8:00 a.m. Saturday. Early morning practices are the standard in the rowing world and allow student athletes to make it to 8:00 a.m. classes on time. The Novice Men's squad will be practicing at 4 PM this season.

Do we get to travel?

Yes! All squads travel to Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Varsity squads travel to Boston, MA and San Diego, CA .

What is a coxswain?

Coxswains are generally smaller people who sit in the boat and motivate rowers. He or she is the only person who steers the boat, instructs the rowers, and executes race strategy.

Who can join?

Men and women can join Texas Crew. We have four squads: Varsity Men, Novice Men, Varsity Women, and Novice Women.

What is a novice?

Novices are first-year rowers who compete in events against other similarly-experienced rowers. After rowing for a year, nov- ice rowers become varsity members.

What is UT Rowing?

UT Rowing is a university-sponsored NCAA women's rowing program. Since the NCAA does not recognize men's rowing, both our men's and women's squads compete at the club/ collegiate level. UT Rowing members do not need to pay dues, whereas Texas Crew members do. Although we travel to many of the same places, do not practice with UT Rowing. Also, Texas Crew makes sure that every athlete gets a chance to race.

What is Texas Crew Executive Board?

Texas Crew relies on hired coaches to run practices and pre- pare training schedules, but the logistics of the organization are student-run, requiring an Executive Board to handle decision- making and implementation of team policy. Comprised of 10 members, Executive Board includes the following positions: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Historian, Secretary, Web- master, Equipment Manager, Apparel Coordinator, Fundraising Chair, and Travel Coordinator.

How much does it cost?

Although dues range from $650-$750, our Texas Crew Alumni Foundation and Fundraising Chair constantly present opportuni- ties to lower dues. If rowers have trouble paying, we create payment plans to help. We would rather have you row.
