About the UPA

Find out more about the University of Texas at Austin's Undergraduate Philosophy Association, like who we are, what we do, and how to get more information.

This week

We will be reading Geoff Sayre-McCord's article in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy on moral realism. A PDF version is available at the link provided in an email sent out Wednesday, November 14.

Coming up

We will not be having a meeting November 23, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Go home and debate philosophy with your families.

What we are

The Undergraduate Philosophy Association is a student-run organization open to all undergraduates at UT Austin. By hosting numerous events and gatherings, we aim to enhance the quality of undergraduate education and improve the quality of community for philosophy majors.

Our present and past membership includes students who plan on going to law school, those who intend to pursue graduate studies in philosophy, and even some who just enjoy our company. Everyone is welcome.

What we do

With the help of the UT Department of Philosophy, we sponsor numerous events for students. Some events, such as reading groups, social gatherings, and informal discussions are meant to foster discourse among peers. Others, such as professor lectures and graduate student talks, are meant to promote interaction between students, professors, and graduate students beyond the traditional classroom setting.

In addition, we produce a yearly philosophy journal, Ex Nihilo. The journal accepts papers from undergraduate students throughout the world and strives to publish thought-provoking essays for the community at large.

If you would like any more information concerning the Association, please contact the officers at socrates@uts.cc.utexas.edu.
