About Us

Mission

El Grupo de Danza y Arte Folklórico de la Universidad de Tejas develops its members to represent the rich and unique culture of Mexico.

History

As quoted from the 1977 edition of the Univeristy of Texas yearbook, The Cactus:

“Formed in October 1975, El Grupo was a non-profit, student educational organization sponsored by the Division of Recreational Sports at the University. They were the first group of their kind in the Austin community to offer an authentic example of folkloric ballet."

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I have never danced before, or have not danced since I was very young?

  • Experience is not required as basic dance steps and choreography are taught by experienced members and guest instructors.
Are members required to perform?
  • No; there are opportunities for shared social activities, too! Non-performers are encouraged to help with administrative matters such as presentations, prop and costume management, and other officer positions.
Do I provide my own costume?
  • No. Our group owns costumes and accessories for each of the regions we perform.
What about shoes and other personal items?
  • All members provide their own footwear and some articles of clothing. Men should have a pair of black botines (boots), and women should have a pair of white pumps. Women also need fake eyelashes, make-up, and a practice skirt. All shoes and clothing can be purchased at Maraichi Connection. Members are also expected to wear appropriate work-out clothing to practice. Locker rooms are available in the basement and assigned lockers may be available soon.
