On Saturday, March 27, 1999, the Dallas/Fort Worth Kendo & Iaido Kyokai (DFWKIK) sponsored the Texas Open / Nabeshima Cup. The Nabeshima Cup is scheduled every two years but there were some changes this year. First, the Nabeshima Cup was open to participants with the rank 3-dan or below. Second, the Texas Open, a separate tournament within the Nabeshima Cup, was created for 4-dan and above. Third and finally, both events were made open to any member of the AUSKF that wished to participate. This year, there were participants from New Orleans, Memphis, University of Arkansas, Oklahoma City, Longmont, Colorado Springs, Austin, The University of Texas, San Antonio, and Dallas. Both tournaments took place at the Hockaday School Gymnasium in Dallas, Texas.
