The Austin Kendo Doshikai
Dear students,
I would like to leave this letter as an expression of what I believe is
the mutual feeling of the members of the Austin Kendo Dojo, as to its
primary purpose, philosophical foundation.
The "One Cut
" ideal is my gift to the Austin Kendo Dojo. It is represented
on our Teneguis by the beautiful and strong calligraphy of Eido Roshi,
Abbot of the Dai Bosatsu Zendo in Beecher Lake, NY.
"One Cut"
is the decision and action as one. It is Acting upon what one knows
is right, without deliberation or hesitation.
"One Cut" is freedom to act
from one's Heart Mind. "One Cut"
means to cut off preconceptions, useless unfounded thinking. It is
the ideal of perfect wisdom. The cutting off of delusion and the awakening
of reality. It is the last cut necessary.
Our Dojo is unique among the Dojo's of this country. We
began as a school without a proper ranking sensei; and yet because of
the enthusiasm and determination of the members we have grown and
are developing strong Kendo. The reason for this is the awareness of its
members of the real meaning of Kendo. I do not wish to elaborate on the
meaning but to say that the Sword "Ken" and the Way "Do"
are one. If we always strive to maintain the balance of "Ken" and
"Do", and act with "One Cut"
to cut off ignorance in favor of wisdom, our Dojo will be as a guide to other
schools around the country.
My greatest thanks for allowing me to learn with you.
